Guhit Sudlungan Wins Avida Towers Centera’s 3D Street Painting Contest

Visual arts student group Guhit Sudlungan from Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP–Sta. Mesa) emerged as the grand winner in the recent Avida Towers Centera’s 3D Street Painting contest and festival.

The group took home P75,000 and a glass trophy for their artwork “Greater Access to Convergence” organized by Avida Towers Centera at EDSA cor. Reliance Street in Mandaluyong City last March 18 to 19. The awarding was held at the MegaTent in Pasig City as part of the launch of Avida Land Corp’s latest high-rise development, Avida Towers Centera.

Filipino artists, professionals, and amateurs gathered and showcased their artworks according to the theme “Fast-forward: Life at the Center of the Metropolis”. But out of the 24 teams, it was Guhit Sudlungan who emerged victorious. They got their inspirations from the works of American master artist and architect Kurt Wenner.

Guhit Sudlungan’s “Greater Access to Convergence” bagged the first prize in the
recently concluded 3D Street Painting Festival organized by Avida Towers Centera.
The group, which is composed of students from PUP-Sta. Mesa, took home P75,
000 and a special glass trophy. The competition’s theme was “Fast-forward: Life at
the Center of the Metropolis”.

Their three-dimensional (3D) artwork depicted children living on the fringes, awaiting a conceptual bright future with a very noticeable red Avida balloon at the center.

“We were a bit discouraged when we learned that some of the artists we look up to joined the competition because they are already accomplished and popular. But we just told ourselves to do our best and focus on our work so we could execute our plans correctly...it was really a huge a challenge to paint the ground” said Arnold Lalongisip of Guhit Sudlungan.

Other team members include Neil Defeo, John Mark Saycon, Justito Fadriquela, Jr. Malanio Balauitan III , Jasper Barba, and Joel Chavez.

Judges include Avida Marketing Manager Tess Tatco, Ayala Land Senior Architect Petes Gamboa and Avida Project Manager Ryan Ybañez. They were joined by two noted Filipino artists: painter, poet, and Philippine Star columnist Igan D’ Bayan, and artist, cartoonist and film animator Jason Moss.

The entries were judged according to:

• Artistic Merits (45%)
• Relevance to the Theme (35%)
• Over-all Impact (20%)

Second place winning P50,000 and a trophy went to the Stycon group. The 3D design is a top view looking down to a modern city from above. Entitled “Connected and Green,” the group is made up of Alvin Anonuevo, Pars Cea, Jawo Gonzales, and Manolette Tizon.

On third place is an eccentric rendition of a half-naked woman showing her bossom with a backdrop of a modern city in rays of purple and yellow. The five-piece group from University of the Philippines Diliman had their artwork entitled “Metropolis Mania”.

They Fine Arts students Anna Leah Aldaba, Kathleen Fallaria, Clarissa Marie Rodriguez, Ralph Louis Barrientos, and Clara Herrera—collectively known as 4:20 — took home P30,000 and a glass trophy.

Moreover, Avida Towers Centera will also hosting a most 'Liked' 3D street painting in its Facebook fan page. The entry that will get the most number of “likes” wins P20, 000 and a trophy.
